Hints of Spring

Spring awakens in a coloured gown,

Of green, purple, yellow and brown,

And drops of white are dotted galore,

Through decaying wood on forest floor.

Daffodils and tulips of yellow and red,

With bluebells to form a purple bed,

‘neath a canopy of young leaf and bud,

Roots in a firm foundation of mud.

A mass of clusters of white and green,

A carpet of anemones are there to be seen,

New life amongst dead twigs and bark,

Left from last year; a winter’s mark.

Honeysuckle, slender, around tree stem,

Like petticoat tails; a lacy hem,

Gorse sprouts up between the pines,

All with leaves of prickly spines.

Feathery fronds of young bracken plants,

Unfurl slowly; you may spy by chance,

The graceful leaves that criss and cross,

That lie within a cradle of moss.

Creatures pair and mate to bring,

The earth to have new of everything,

The rains will cause newfound lush,

Ready for a springtime flush.
